Collapsed-Structure Operations — BASIC

An introduction to rescue work following structural collapse. Initial scene and structural assessment are combined with preparation for deployment. Key topics include rubble-site hazards, personal protective equipment and communication between rescuers.

- Rescuer safety and protection.
- Alarm signals and radio and non-radio communication.
- Initial assessment and basic appraisal of damaged structures.
- Preparation for deployment and basic worksite observation.
- Basic search and rescue equipment.
- Calling and listening to locate casualties without instruments.
Participants practise assessment, communication and operational preparation, learning the importance of observation and the constraints imposed by surrounding hazards. The module provides a foundation for further search and rescue techniques.
Who we train
Volunteer and professional firefighters, rescue associations and other rescue organisations, and Territorial Defence personnel preparing for collapsed-structure operations.
How we train
An introduction and practical exercises with ongoing discussion, followed by a final consolidation exercise.
Settings and connections
Natural or simulated rubble site, or a suitable vacant training building. Delivery at the client’s premises requires prior agreement on the location. This module prepares participants for casualty location, lifting, shoring and breaching.
