Hypothermia — paramedic level

RM · 8h

Build a coherent care plan for a patient with accidental hypothermia. Practise clinical assessment, warming and transport decisions, and responses to deterioration within the paramedic scope.

Ask about training

Assessment, warming and transport need to form one care plan.

Caring for a patient with accidental hypothermia means connecting clinical assessment with the options available at the scene and the pathway to further treatment. This module examines those decisions together in the context of a specific situation.

Scenarios cover assessment and monitoring, responses to deterioration, resuscitation, and planning warming and transport within the paramedic scope. We also discuss reasons to escalate care and cooperation with the team that will continue it.

You develop your ability to explain decisions and maintain a coherent plan as conditions change. Patient observations are simulated; participants are not deliberately exposed to hypothermia.

Training content

  • Clinical assessment, monitoring and recognition of deterioration.
  • Resuscitation and selection of medical interventions and rewarming within paramedic competencies.
  • Transport planning and escalation of care, including the ECLS/ECMO context; frostbite. Avalanche context depends on the group.

Learning outcomes

  • Participants link clinical assessment with a rewarming and transport plan.
  • They respond to changes and communicate the need to escalate care.

Who it is for

Professionally qualified paramedics in the role described in this module.

How we train

Workshops, problem-solving tasks and scenarios with discussion of decisions and repeated practice. Patient parameters are simulated; no deliberate hypothermia exposure.

Environments and links

The training setting is selected to suit the group’s tasks and available facilities.
