Hypothermia BASIC

This module consolidates the basics of caring for patients with accidental hypothermia, combining assessment with practical thermal protection and preparation for transport.

Training content

• Heat-loss mechanisms, recognition and assessment of hypothermia severity.
• Protection from wind, moisture and heat loss to the ground.
• Passive rewarming and basic active external rewarming.
• Patient packaging using professional and improvised equipment.
• Reassessment, safe movement and evacuation preparation.
• Basic considerations for resuscitation and AED use in hypothermia.

Participants practise assessment, thermal protection and full patient packaging on a stretcher or mattress. Temperature and patient condition are simulated; participants are not deliberately cooled. Frostbite and hyperthermia are outside the BASIC scope.

Who we train

Rescuers with advanced first aid qualifications and paramedics working in field and specialist rescue. Exercises reflect participants’ qualifications; groups with similar competency levels are preferred.

How we train

Short introductions, demonstrations, workshops and scenarios, with an emphasis on practice. Performance observation and debriefing, without a formal examination.

Settings and connections

Classroom, training facility or outdoor setting, including the client’s premises. Exercise conditions and equipment are agreed with the organiser.
